Third–Person POV
Sasha’s hand hovered over the screen, frozen mid–tap. Slowly, her fingers began to shake, and she couldn’t stop
them.
Rory never acted like this. No matter how bad their fights got, he’d always come around eventually, even if it took some crying and yelling first. This silence wasn’t like him at all.
Sasha panicked. She dialed 911, and the police promised to send someone out to look for him.
She didn’t trust them to handle it. She got in her car and tore through every place she could think of, anywhere Rory might go, before ending up at the house.
When she finally pushed through the front door, what she found inside stopped her cold.
She made it to the living room, but just barely. Her legs felt like dead weight. The furniture was untouched, but the family portrait that used to hang behind the TV had been ripped to shreds.
Keith’s face had been torn away separately. Rory’s piece was set aside on its own, next to a photo of his parents.
But Sasha’s face had been carved apart with a knife, slashed over and over with a kind of fury that went beyond anger. Her features were blacked out with marker. Her body in the photo had been shredded into nothing.
Her throat went dry. Something heavy and awful settled in her stomach. She couldn’t believe Rory hated her this much, enough to destroy every trace of her so thoroughly.
The confusion, the hurt, and the raw injustice of it built until she thought her chest would burst. Her vision blurred, and her jaw clenched.
“Rory! Do you hate me this much? You didn’t even do this to Keith! Why me? Why? What did I do that was so terrible you’d treat me like this?”
Her voice echoed through the empty home. No one answered.
After a long time, she pulled herself together and walked toward the bedroom with a bitter laugh, bracing herself for whatever else Rory had destroyed. But what she expected wasn’t there.
She’d assumed the bedroom would be trashed. She’d thought she would see the 999 love letters she’d written him over the years, the photos, and the handmade gifts all smashed and torn apart.
Instead, everything was perfectly intact. Every single piece was displayed in front of her, each one carefully preserved inside its own glass case.
Sasha froze, and whatever she’d been about to say vanished.
She blinked hard and started flipping through the letters, her hands unsteady.
“Sash, I like you too. Ever since the day you told me I could lean on you the way I leaned on Dad, I’ve liked you.”
“Sash, you’re so annoying. I told you that you can’t just kiss a guy on the face whenever you feel like it. You actually shut off the lights during study hall just to kiss me? That was my first kiss!”

“Sasha, I’m actually mad this time. Can you please stop picking fights with Keith? But since you apologized properly, I guess I’ll forgive you.”
He’d kept every single one. And at the bottom of each, he’d written back without ever telling her.
She read through them one by one. Toward the end, it felt like something inside her had been torn apart, and the hurt was unbearable.
Then she reached the last letter.
“Sasha! I hate you! How could you sleep with Keith? How could you betray me? I loved you so much! You said you’d marry me!
“How could you be this cruel? You said we’d study abroad together, so why did you steal my scholarship and give it to Keith? Is he really that irresistible to you?
“Sasha Belmont, I hate you! You got Mom killed. I hate you!”
