Chapter 9
Rory’s POV
The longer Sasha talked, the more uneasy I became.
“But Rory, I was willing. I know you hate me for what happened to Mom. Even a month ago, when you told me to put a knife in my own stomach, I did it.
“A week ago, you told me to jump off the building, and I didn’t die. Someone got to me in time.
“Three days ago, you told me to drive into oncoming traffic. I still didn’t die. Please don’t be angry, Rory. I promise I’ll get it right.”
My skin crawled. The words tore out of me before I could think. “Sasha! Are you out of your mind? That wasn’t me! I’ve been in Sudeval this whole time!”
The second she heard my voice, Sasha’s eyes shifted, unfocused. “Rory, am I hearing things?”
I grabbed her by the shoulders. “Sasha, you’re sick. You need to see a doctor. Right now.”
But she threw her arms around me and held on like I’d disappear if she let go. Tears soaked through my shirt at the shoulder.
“Rory, you’re finally talking to me again. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. What happened three years ago…”
That was when I realized she’d been faking it. The realization that I’d been played hit like a wave of disgust.
I shoved her off. “Get out. You and I are done.”
She wrapped herself around me again, saying over and over how much she’d missed me. I’d had enough. I grabbed the glass of water off the table and threw it in her face.
Sasha stumbled backward and fell. “Rory, don’t go… Please don’t go. I waited three years for you!”
I let out a cold laugh. “Three years doesn’t change what you are. You got my mother killed. There’s nothing left here worth staying for.
“Sasha, I used to be stupid. I’m not anymore. You’re a terrible person, and I see that now.”
I walked out and didn’t look back. I could still hear her crying behind me, swearing that she’d changed, but none of it mattered.
Over the next few days, I buried myself in reclaiming Dad’s company. Once I had it back, I relocated the headquarters to Auvienne and left again, putting distance between myself and Sasha for good.
She went right back to tearing the world apart trying to find me, but it didn’t matter. However far she looked, I wasn’t coming back.
As for Keith, Sasha had made good on her threat. He’d been married off to that old woman and had six kids in three years.
He’d tried to escape so many times, and every time they caught him and broke his legs. On top of that, he’d even gone blind.

Neither of them had anything to do with me anymore. I didn’t want to care, and I didn’t.
Whatever love and friendship I’d carried from those years, I left it all behind where it belonged, buried with the
past.
