He pivoked at me.

“I thought you’d never leave. So I figured nothing I did could really hurt you.”

“The necklace. The front seat. Bringing Blaire to the dinner. I told myself it was fine, that I’d explain later and you’d forgive me.

“I used the way you loved me to make myself feel invincible.”

He paused. The smile that crossed his face was entirely self-deprecating.

“I was a piece of shit.”

I didn’t argue.

He was right.

“You don’t owe me forgiveness just because I finally figured out I was wrong.”

I studied his face.

“Then why are you here?”

“To try again.”

I almost laughed.

“You just said I don’t have to forgive you.

“Forgiving me is your call. But whether I…”

He cut himself off.

I raised an eyebrow.

He squeezed his eyes shut like the next words physically hurt.

“If you don’t want me to, I won’t.”

For the first time, I genuinely didn’t know what to say.

I took a breath. “I don’t want a relationship right now.”

“I know.”

“I might not go back after I graduate.”

“I know.”

“I could be here for years.”

“Ik

Then what do you actually know, Grant?”

He held my gaze. When he spoke, his voice was barely above a breath

“I know you’re not mine.”

“That’s why I have to earn you back.”

My heart slammed once, hard.

I hated it.

I’d already decided I was done with him. Why did my own heart have zero loyalty?

I looked away. “Do what you want.”

As I walked home that night, the comments came flooding back, more than I’d ever seen at once.

[Wait, the male lead actually FOLLOWED HER?]

[She’s supposed to be sabotaging Blaire by now, not thriving on her own!]

[The entire plot is off the rails.]

[Hold on. Is it because she never fought for any of it in the first place?]

I slowed down.

That was it.

I never fought for any of it.

Blaire wanted my room; I gave it to her. She wanted the front seat; I let her have it. Grant handed my place at the dinner to someone else; I walked out.

The comments kept saying those things would turn me into someone unrecognizable.

But what if I never wanted them badly enough to lose myself over them?

How could a story play out if the main character refused to follow the script?

The comments flickered, dimmed, and one by one went dark.

I never saw them again.

months later, Blaire imploded.

Goldn’t have known about if at all It Mom hadn’t broken down on the phone,

Blaire’s beauty account had never taken off

The Whitmore name drew some initial buzz, but she wasn’t passionate about beauty, and her content couldn’t hold an audience. The numbers dropped fast.

To keep up appearances, she started spending a lot.

First it was her credit card. Then she started dipping into project budgets at Whitmore Group, Eventually, she was reselling luxury goods from corporate purchases and funneling the money into her oHN RELOMÁS.

The numbers weren’t small.

Dad was so angry he didn’t come home for days.

Mom was crying when she told me. “I just wanted to give her what she missed. How did it get this bad?”

I didn’t know what to say to that.

The signs had been there for a while.

Blaire had always operated on one belief: the Whitmores owed her nineteen years. That meant everything I’d

ever had was rightfully hers.

My room. My resources. My identity. Our parents’ attention.

She even thought she deserved Grant.

Once someone decides the world owes her, nothing will ever be enough.

Mom eventually sat Blaire down.

From what I heard, it was brutal.

Blaire finally cracked and said the quiet part out loud.

“If we hadn’t been switched, everything she has would be mine!”

Mom was quiet for a long time. Then she said:

“We owe you nineteen years. And we want to make it right.”

“But Sienna doesn’t owe you a thing.”
