I cooperated with treatment and learned to control my breathing and my shift impulses again.
I thought that once I was stable, I could complete the territorial transfer and bring Mia back to the Tidewatch Pack with me.
The year before the next Thanksgiving, I went to her academy in secret.
It was family open day. Children who hadn’t yet had their first shift sat with their guardians, making wolf-shaped crests and writing down the support they hoped to receive during their awakening.
I saw Mia through the classroom window.

Sloane was sitting beside her, holding her hand as she glued colored feathers to a wooden wolf crest. Mia wore an easy smile I hadn’t seen on her face in a very long time!
Sloane had already taken my place.
Anger overwhelmed me. I pushed open the door and demanded to know why she was there, sitting in a guardian’s seat. I knocked over glue and glitter, and my wolf’s pressure leaked through the classroom.
The teachers, parents, and children present all became witnesses when Grant submitted his next report to the arbitration court.

I would take Mia away from them.
I never imagined that fight would last six years.
And I certainly never imagined that what I would lose in the end wouldn’t be custody, but Mia herself.
