Chapter 19

The safety incident report that nurse filed made the healers responsible for me and Sloane aware of the entire

scam.

Over the next few days, the younger nurses would lower their voices whenever they saw Sloane. She was the Alpha-appointed family representative, yet she had coached an awakening cub to fake a concussion. That flew in the face of the healing center’s strictest safety rules regarding minors.

Once, a nurse examined Sloane’s ankle and spoke only about the treatment plan. Before leaving, she paused at the door and said, “People caring for young wolves can make errors in judgment. But you cannot use a medical emergency to test someone’s feelings. Professional ethics matter more than titles.”

Sloane’s face went white.

She knew exactly who the remark was aimed at.

The day I was preparing for my discharge, she finally broke. She barged into my room, shut the door, and dropped her gentle facade.

“Nora, did you have to put all of this into the record?” she said through clenched teeth. “Now the entire healing center looks at me like I’m some kind of monster. Are you

satisfied?”

I didn’t look at her. I just folded the last of my clothes and placed them in my suitcase.

I had no desire to argue with her anymore.
