Chapter 6 A Mother’s Fury
There was still a long list of things to take care of the next day.

The next morning at breakfast, my mother placed a bowl of oatmeal in front of me and said, “Sonia, you got into Defense Technology Institute. Your father and I want to throw you a graduation party. We’ll invite our relatives, along with Silas’ family and Rachel’s family.”
My hand froze around my bowl. “Don’t invite them.”
My mother and father both looked up at me.
“What’s wrong? Did you guys fight?”
I set my bowl down, causing it to tap against the table with a sharp clink. “Mom, Dad, there’s something I need to tell you.”
It took me about 15 minutes to explain everything from beginning to end.
Silas and Rachel had logged into my application account and changed my first-choice of university to the local community college. Fortunately, I had caught it in time and changed it back.
My father’s spoon slipped from his hand.
My mother stared at me for three long seconds. Then, she shot to her feet. The chair scraped across the floor with a harsh screech. She was shaking all over, and she nearly yanked the ties of her apron loose in her fury.
She hissed, “What did you just say? Silas changed your college application? He was trying to make you go to community college or spend another year retaking the exam?”
I nodded.
She stared at me for another three seconds, lips pressed into a thin line. Then, she grabbed her phone, opened her contacts, and called Silas’ mom.
She put the call on speaker and set her phone on the table.
When the call connected, Samantha answered with a smile in her voice, “Hello, Emily. You’re up early-
“Your son changed my daughter’s college application.” My mother’s voice was tight with restrained anger.
The line suddenly went silent.
Several seconds passed before Samantha finally spoke again, her voice suddenly hoarse. “What? That’s impossible. Silas would never do something like that. You must have made some kind of mistake.”
“My daughter told me that. I believe her.”
“Emily, just give me a minute. I’ll get Silas and ask him
“There’s no need. Check it yourself.”

My mother hung up and set the phone back on the table face down.
She sat back down and picked up her bowl, but her hand was still trembling. The spoon bumped against the rim a few times before she managed to scoop up a spoonful of oatmeal.
She didn’t eat it. Instead, she stared at the spoon for a long while before setting it back down.
The dining room stayed quiet for over an hour.
I went back to my room after breakfast. I could hear my parents talking in the living room and hear the occasional scrape of a chair being moved despite the closed door.
Then, the doorbell rang. I answered it.
Samantha stood outside with red rimmed eyes. Her hair was messy, like she’d rushed out of her house without even brushing it. She wore a dull gray jacket with the zipper only halfway up.
Silas stood behind her, his expression dark with anger.
As soon as they stepped inside, Samantha bowed deeply to my whole family.
I saw her shoulders shaking when she bowed. It took several seconds before she finally straightened. “I’m so sorry. I failed to raise my son properly.”
Then, she turned and shoved Silas forward, her voice low but firm. “Apologize to Sonia.”
Silas didn’t move. He leaned against the wall by the entryway, staring at the floor. His lips were pressed into a tight line, his jaw clenched.
“She changed it back anyway. She didn’t actually end up going to community college. Why are you all making such a big deal out of this?”
Samantha immediately slapped him across the face. The crack echoed through the silent living room.
Silas’ head snapped to the side. He froze for a few seconds and wiped the corner of his mouth with the back of his hand. Then, he pulled the front door open and walked out.
The door slammed shut behind him.
Samantha stood there with her hand still suspended in the air. She went completely still for three seconds before covering her mouth and collapsing into a crouch.
