Chapter 4

Chapter 4

ManoBook

Ryan didn’t find the envelope until 2300 hours.

INSTALL

He had come home expecting the usual – porch light on, dinner in the fridge, Nora reading on the couch with the dog at her feet

Instead, the house was dark. Silent. The dog was at the neighbor’s.

“Nora?”

His voice echoed off the walls he had chosen, the furniture he had placed, the life he had constructed like a forward operating base.

No answer.

He cleared every room the way he’d been trained – fast, systematic, weapon-hand ready out of pure instinct.

Bedroom. Bed made. Her nightstand bare.

Closet. Her clothes still there. Shoes. Jewelry. Everything.

But her passport was gone. Her medical credentials were gone.

–

And the framed photo of her mother – the one she touched every single morning – gone.

His chest locked up.

He strode to his office and saw the envelope.

He tore it open. Read it once. Read it again.

Then Commander Ryan Hale – the man who had maintained a resting heart rate of 52 during a firefight in Fallujah – felt his hands go numb.

I found Operation Hearthstone.

I’ve read every quarterly assessment.

Captain Nora Sinclair will no longer exist.

The wedding ring rolled across the desk and dropped to the floor with a sound that would echo in his skull for years.

“No. No, no-

He grabbed his phone. Dialed her. Straight to a dead line. Not voicemail. Dead.

Again. Dead.

Again.

“NORA!”

He called his commanding officer. “Sir, she found the file. She’s gone.”

Chapter 4

A long, dangerous silence

‘How much did she take?”

“Everything. Photos of every page.

That file is classified, Hale. If she leaks it-”

“She won’t leak it She’s not trying to burn us. She’s trying to disappear.”

“Then find her. Quietly. Before this becomes a congressional problem.”

Ryan activated every resource he had – SEAL networks, intelligence contacts, military police, civilian databases.

Within six hours, his team delivered the answer.

INSTALL

“Commander, there’s no record of a Nora Sinclair or Nora Hale on any commercial flight, bus, or train in the last seventy-two hours.”

That’s impossible.”

“She’s not in any civilian system. It’s like she was never here.”

Colonel Nakamura had routed everything through a classified military medical channel – the same system used to relocate doctors working on black-site trauma programs. No civilian footprint. No searchable record.

Nora Sinclair had done what no target had ever done to Commander Ryan Hale.

She had vanished completely.

He stood in the kitchen of the house he had built as a stage set, surrounded by the props of a life that had never been real, and felt something he hadn’t

experienced since Kandahar.

Fear

Not tactical fear. Not mission fear

The raw, animal terror of a man who has just realized that the one real thing in his manufactured life had walked out the door – and he had no

operation, no training, and no protocol to get her back.

His phone buzzed. A text from Lieutenant Keyes:

“Commander Hale, what is Operation Hearthstone? Nora sent me a strange message. What’s going on?”

He stared at the screen.

Then he hurled the phone across the room.

It shattered against the wall, next to the framed wedding photo – both of them smiling on that beach in Monterey.

Both of them lying.

But only one of them had known.

Chapter 4

Within two hours, a joint task force was assembled – military intelligence, JAG legal, counterintelligence

“Find her I don’t care about protocol. I don’t care about jurisdictions.”

‘She is my wife”

His commanding officer cut in coldly. “She was your assignment, Hale. And you compromised it Find the files before they surface. The woman is

secondary.

Ryan’s jaw clenched so tight something cracked in his molar.

“The woman,” he said quietly, “is not secondary.”

The room went still.

Because what none of them knew yet – what Ryan himself didn’t know – was that I hadn’t just taken the Hearthstone file.

Buried beneath it in that drawer, I had found a second folder. One that had nothing to do with me.

Financial records. Black budget disbursements. Unauthorized wire transfers to accounts in Cyprus and the Cayman Islands.

Operation Hearthstone wasn’t just a domestic surveillance program.

It was a money laundering pipeline running through the United States Special Operations Command

And I had every single receipt.
