Chapter 18

Daphne froze mid–step, eavesdropping intently.

The three men spoke in unison, then waited anxiously for Evelyn’s reaction.

Yet Evelyn remained expressionless, leisurely pouring herself a cup of coffee.

“Evelyn, I know I realized my feelings too late,” Sebastian began, voice thick with remorse. “I was blinded by Daphne–fooled into thinking you were spoiled and willful. That was my mistake. We grew up together, yet I let her act like a victim and misunderstood

you.”

He pulled a pearl–stitched doll from his pocket and held it out to her. “Look, I remade the pearl doll you threw away. I know I hurt you, but please… come back with me. Let’s start over.”

“Evelyn, I was wrong too,” Julian cut in urgently, presenting a jeweled crown. “I replaced the one you discarded with an even more beautiful one. You’ll always be my princess–please, come home.”

Not to be outdone, Nathaniel produced a framed photo–a snapshot of them at eighteen. “Evelyn, I had this reprinted. We spent over twenty years inseparable. No one understands you like we do. Come back to me, and I’ll cherish you like before.”

Three offerings hovered in the air, awaiting her response.

Evelyn chuckled softly.

Meeting Sebastian’s gaze, she said coolly, “Funny you mention growing up together. I could’ve sworn Daphne was your companion, given how easily you believed her lies over decades of friendship. Pathetic, isn’t it?”

childhood

She took the pearl doll–and dropped it. The thread snapped on impact, sending pearls scattering across the floor like shattered

memories.

Turning to Julian, her smile turned razor–sharp. “And you–how can you say these things without shame? Remember that camping trip when you drove them back and left me alone in the wilderness? Took every vehicle, didn’t care if I was terrified. Some ‘princess‘

treatment.”

The jeweled crown met the ground with a crash, gems fracturing like their broken bonds. Shards embedded themselves in their calves, drawing blood through tailored trousers.

“Then there’s you, Nathaniel.” Her voice dripped ice. “Pushing me for Daphne’s sake, leaving me injured. Knowing you all these years might be my greatest misfortune.”

The photo tore cleanly in her hands.

Watching their defeated expressions, she delivered the final blow, “The best apology you three could give? Never appear before me again. Seeing you brings nothing but disgust. You ruined my birthday, humiliated me before Crestwood’s elite–every memory with you

is tainted.”

“This ends now. If you harass me further, I won’t hold back for old times‘ sake. You’re just bitter the girl who trailed after you finally walked away.”

Without a backward glance, she strode past Daphne lurking by the door–pausing just long enough to flash a derisive smirk.

That look shattered Daphne completely. That same infuriating superiority.

Back when the Caldwells enrolled her in their elite academy, the young masters of the academy had sneered at her poverty. Evelyn hadn’t been cruel, but Daphne craved that same reverence–to be admired, not mocked as some stinking charity case polluting their

Halls.

So she’d schemed to steal everything from Evelyn. Slowly, she’d won the trio’s favor, climbing the social ladder while others fawned

over her.

Yet Evelyn remained untouchable, watching her antics like some ridiculous clown.

Evelyn’s very existence screamed one truth: everything Daphne had clawed for, Evelyn was born with.

God, how she hated her.
