both of them turned without hesitation.
Neither of them looked back.
I took out my phone and saw a message from my mother.
She was asking why I still wasn’t home.
I rewrote my reply several times before finally sending: *Something came up, Mom. I’ll be a few days late. Go ahead and have Thanksgiving without me this year.
Her reply came almost instantly.
