After that, Sloane never came to see me. Not once.

I had no desire to keep watching them perform. 

I pressed the call button by the bed. The sharp chime cut through the room’s false warmth. 

Grant and Sloane both stiffened. 

The nurse came in quickly.

“I need to rest. Please ask them to leave.”

The nurse turned to Grant, Sloane, and Mia. She knew Grant was the Alpha of Ironwood Pack, but his rank /didn’t faze her. 

“The patient has requested quiet. This is a neutral healing zone. All three of you need to step outside.” 

After they were escorted out, the nurse adjusted my blanket. She hesitated, then asked, “Are they your 

family?”

“The three of them,” I said, looking at the door, “are my ex-partner, my daughter, and my former best friend.” 

Confusion crossed the nurse’s face. 

In the flat tone of someone telling a story about strangers, I added, “My ex-partner cheated on me with my best friend. His family used their rank and connections to restrict my access to my daughter. Six years later, the daughter I raised chose to live with them and asked a judge to let another woman be her mother.”
