The moment I stepped out of the Portland airport, I saw my mother, Eileen, who I hadn’t seen in person in almost
seven years.
She looked so much older than she did on video calls.
The sea wind had carved deep lines around her eyes. Suddenly, I couldn’t stop the tears.
My mother hurried over and folded me into her arms. She waited until my body accepted the embrace before she gently patted my back.
“You’re home,” she said. “There’s a blanket in the car and hot soup at the house. Everything else can wait.”
