She stopped in the middle of the bustling market and looked at me with a deep seriousness.
“Nora, were you happy at all during those six years?”
I went still.
All those years, I had fought for Mia. I had tried to prove I was a good mother, and I had tried to prove that the Ironwood Pack was wrong about me.
But I had never been happy.

Her voice broke slightly. “Because in my heart, you matter more than any ruling.”
I covered my face and let out a laugh that was half a sob, tears slipping through my fingers.
The unconditional love I had been searching for had been here all along.
I was the one who had kept leaving it behind.

In the end, I stayed on the Maine coast with my mother, and before witnesses, I rejoined the Tidewatch Pack
I didn’t hear much about Grant and Mia after that.
Every now and then, an old classmate with distant family ties to the Caldwells would pass along a few details.
I heard that half a year after I left, Grant and Sloane had a spectacular fight.
