Chapter 24
Sloane had been pushing Grant to make a public claim.
She desperately needed the mate registration and the Luna title to prove that everything she had fought for truly belonged to her.
Grant kept using Mia as an excuse.
He said Mia had only just adjusted to the new family structure, and her wolf was still in the fragile awakening phase. Holding a claiming ceremony now would put too much pressure on her.
During one argument, Sloane brought up my name.

She demanded to know if he still cared about me.
Grant was furious.

“If I cared about Nora, why would I have spent six years driving her out of Ironwood Pack?”
But Sloane couldn’t accept that answer.
She kept asking, “If the past is over, why won’t you choose me publicly?”
She had never really understood Grant.

What he hated most was being forced to face the clear consequences of his actions.
The two of them fell into a cold war.
Grayhaven’s social circles noticed the change quickly. Grant was still an Alpha without an official partner, and alliance families began inviting him to meet suitable, high-ranking she-wolves. Those invitations weren’t just about dating. They were about bloodlines, trade, and territorial cooperation.
Sloane grew more and more insecure.
Their worst clash happened at a regional pack charity gala. Leaders, family representatives, and heads of healing institutions from multiple packs were all present.

In front of everyone, Sloane threw a glass of red wine on Grant’s female companion for the evening.
Grant demanded that she apologize at once and publicly clarify that he had no private relationship with the other
woman.
Sloane didn’t believe him and accused him of being a hypocrite.
I actually did believe Grant.
When he betrayed me, he had done it quietly, carefully. He would never leave such obvious leverage in a room

At the height of the conflict, Grant didn’t comfort Sloane.
He only looked at her with weary disgust and said the line I knew all too well.
“Stop the drama.”
From then on, their relationship dropped to absolute
zero.
Mia’s position in the Pack House also became awkward. I heard her school performance declined, and her awakening counselor worried that the constant family conflict might affect her first shift.

The old classmate who told me all this urged me, “Mia is caught between an Alpha and a temporary guardian. Things might be really bad for her. She is your daughter, after all.”
I only smiled.
That was the life Mia had sworn to choose in a court of
law.
I respected her choice. I would not carry its consequences for her anymore.
Now, I only wanted to live on the Maine coast with my mother. At night, I could hear the Tidewatch patrol

wolves sending border reports through the mind-link. In the mornings, I walked along the shoreline, my own wolf slowly recovering in the familiar scents of salt wind and pine.
Here, no one asked me to be an Alpha’s partner. No one measured my worth by whether I was a mother.
I was only Nora Wren.
And the people and things in Grayhaven had nothing to do with me anymore.
