Chapter 4

Grant’s words struck the most vulnerable part of me with surgical precision.

*Have you lost control again?*

I thought of our mating ceremony. It had been autumn in Connecticut then, too. In front of the elders and the entire pack, Grant had sworn that he chose me of his own free will, that he would protect me, and that he would respect my wolf.

Sloane had been my only witness. She’d linked her arm through mine and warned Grant, with mock seriousness, that if he ever hurt me, she would be the first to stand against him.

Now, one was my ex-partner, and the other was the woman at his side. They stood there together, judging whether I deserved to keep my freedom.

What was I to them?

A mistake to be managed? A trauma to be treated?

I couldn’t hold back my fury any longer.

“Yes, I’m angry!” My voice shot through the room. “My partner betrayed me and got together with my best friend. Now they’ve had my daughter fake a serious injury to test me. How exactly am I supposed to stay calm,

Grant?”

Grant was silent for a moment, but his expression held nothing but impatience.

Sloane immediately stepped forward, her eyes shining/ with tears.

“Nora, I wronged you. I’ve felt guilty for years. If being angry makes you feel better, you can yell at me, even hit me. I won’t fight back.”
