The moment she finished, Mia reacted like a provoked cub, throwing her arms wide to shield Sloane.
“You are not touching her!”
Grant finally seemed to find the moral high ground he was looking for.
“What happened back then was my fault, not Sloane’s,” he said coolly. “We’ve already wasted six years on this. For Mia’s sake, can’t you move on and stop targeting Sloane?”
I looked at Grant and Mia. Their similar faces held the
same Caldwell certainty: the conviction that their choices were inherently more important.

“Why am I the only one who has to move on?” I asked. “When you betrayed me, did either of you ever think about what I would have to live through?”
I would never forget that night.
I woke in the healing room and could no longer feel the child inside me. The healer told me the extreme stress had triggered the bleeding and a loss-of-control shift impulse. They hadn’t been able to save the pup.
The first thing Grant said to me wasn’t that our child had died.
It was, “Don’t go after Sloane. She’s suffering, too. She’s
