Chapter 7
Sloane’s step faltered for only a second. I saw the faintest smile touch her lips before she walked out.
When Grant let go, he flung my arm away so hard I stumbled back. I fell onto a bench in the corridor, red finger marks already rising on my skin.
He hurried after Sloane, steadying her by the shoulder and murmuring words of comfort.
Then I heard Mia scream at me.
“You monster! Why do you always have to ruin everything? Everywhere you go, something goes wrong!”

Crying, she ran after them and threw herself into Sloane’s
arms.
I sat there watching their retreating backs. They looked like the ideal Alpha family from an Ironwood Pack promotional photo, and I was just the person outside the frame who needed to be erased.
My phone vibrated.
A notification from my ride-share app: *Trip canceled.*

But there wasn’t enough air in my lungs to complete the shift, and I couldn’t force my wolf back down, either.
The lights in the hallway began to warp.
The healers’ voices, the wheels of passing carts, the cry of a distant cub-it all turned razor-sharp, driving straight into my skull. My hearing wouldn’t shut off.
Curled on the bench, I shook uncontrollably, my teeth chattering. Darkness closed in on the edges of my vision, and then even my wolf’s frantic warning went silent.
Just before I lost consciousness, I had one last thought.
