Chapter 6

he chatter exploded all at once.

Without looking at anyone beside me, I walked straight to the front of the stage and stopped.

Sunlight fell across me, and my red dress blazed like fire.

Jack straightened his tie without thinking and took half a step forward.

He pasted on what he clearly thought was a charming smile, undisguised awe filling his eyes.

“Excuse me, are you one of Ella’s guests?” His voice was so gentle it turned my stomach, utterly unlike the mockery in the DMs he’d sent the night before.

I tilted my head slightly, my gaze settling on his smarmy face.

“Jack, we haven’t seen each other in seven years. Has your memory really gotten that bad?” My cool voice carried through Tom’s still–live microphone to every corner of the estate.

Jack froze in place, caught midstep.

Ella charged toward me, and a branch caught and tore the edge of her wedding dress.

She stared hard at my face, her voice rising so sharply it cracked. “Impossible! You’re Sophie?!

“That’s impossible! Sophie is a two–hundred–pound fat freak!”

The guests on the lawn exploded into an uproar.

“Sophie Aubert?! That’s Sophie from high school?!”

“My God, she looks like a completely different person!”

“How did she lose all that weight? Her figure is even better than a top fitness influencer’s!”

Several of the women who had led the mockery back then covered their mouths, their faces twisted with dismay.

I looked at Ella’s panic–stricken face, my crimson lips parting. “Ella, didn’t you post a video inviting me to be your bridesmaid?

“What, now that I’m standing right in front of you, you don’t recognize me?”

Ella flushed, then blanched, her nails digging deep into her palms.

In the sunlight, her painstakingly applied bridal makeup looked stiff and unnatural.

“You… you had work done? You had liposuction?!”

Trying to hold on to the last of her dignity, she screamed, “You paid a fortune to go under the knife! In high school you were as ugly as a pig!”

Beside her, Jack stared at my long, slender neck and sculpted features. His Adam’s apple bobbed sharply.

He pulled at Ella’s arm.

“Ella, stop… Everyone’s watching us.”

He turned to me, his expression almost unbelievably eager to please.

“Sophie, you’ve changed so much. Ella put me up to everything back then. The truth is, I always thought you were

Raturally pretty.

“Do you remember that love letter? I actually kept it all this time…”

The entire crowd erupted at that.

Ella turned and stared at him in disbelief.

“Jack! What are you talking about?! This is our wedding day!”

An influencer livestreaming from the crowd suddenly let out a theatrical gasp. “God! You’re S–fit?! The S–fit with six million followers on Instagram?!”

That revelation sent a shock wave through the crowd.

As if someone had flipped a switch, the guests whipped out their phones, thumbs flying over their screens.

“I found her! It really is her! S–fit’s profile says Sophie Aubert!”

“My God, no wonder. That body, those lines, it’s a work of art!”

“She’s ten thousand times better looking in person!”

Gasps of recognition rippled through the crowd. In an instant, gawking curiosity gave way to a feverish mix of adoration and envy.

Several of the women who had trailed after Ella in school and mocked me hardest were now shoving their way to

the front.

They wore fawning smiles and spoke as warmly as if we were long–lost sisters.

“Sophie, do you remember me? It’s Luna! We were so close in school!”

“Sophie, look at you. I always said you had potential! You’ve done so well. I’m so happy for you!”
