Chapter 2

Across the hospital hall, Tiffany caught my eye and flashd me a triumphant smile, and suddenly I

understood everything.

Every single time, she was the exception.

I buried the dull ache in my chest and dialed the number for the Covert Ops Division.

“Put me on the next sniper mission,” I said flatly. “And cancel my old passport and Social Security

number.”

“… Really? Emily, are you serious? That’s great news! I’ll book you a ticket immediately!”

I hung up before he could say more.

Back then, I had given up every mission at Jonathan’s request. “I don’t want you hurt,” he’d said. So I stayed

home, playing the devoted wife.

But now, I was no longer his wife. And I could never again be a mother.

When I returned to our suburban mansion and began packing my things, Jonathan walked in.

“Clear out a room for Tiffany. Her dog’s in the hospital, and she’s afraid to stay alone.”

I didn’t even look up. “Ask the housekeeper. I’m busy.”

Jonathan grabbed my wrist, his chest heaving.

“Emily, there are limits to jealousy.” His voice was taut.

“I’ve told you before–life in a wealthy family isn’t as easy as you think. A man in my position is under immense pressure. I need a mistress to unwind. Can’t you be more understanding?”

“If you keep making trouble, I’ll make that divorce agreement real.”

My vision blurred as pain bit into my wrist. He didn’t notice that half the bedroom was already emptied of

my belongings. To him, I was just jealous.

The atmosphere dropped to freezing.

I pulled away, but Jonathan’s lashes trembled, and he tossed out a final cold sentence:

“To teach you a lesson, I’ll sleep in the guest room with Tiffany tonight.”

The door slammed shut like a hammer to my heart.

Through the door, I listened all night to their heavy, passionate moans.

Sleepless.

The next morning, as I headed downstairs, the housekeeper who guarded my mother’s urn stopped me

nervously.

Chapter 2

20.001

“Madam…”

A sense of dread washed over me. I pushed her aside and rushed into the living room.

There stood Tiffany, directing others to pour ashes into my mother’s urn.

“What are you doing?!” I lunged at her like a madwoman.

She clutched the urn, looking pitifully wronged.

“Jonathan said there’s no lady of the house anymore. He told me I could handle things however I wanted.”

“My dog died, and I had nowhere to put her ashes. So I borrowed your mother’s urn.”

Rage blinded me. I reached for the urn, but Jonathan shoved me hard against the wall.

“It’s just a damn box. I’ll buy you a thousand more!”

The veins on his forehead bulged.

That “box” was what I had traded my own child’s life to protect–and he dared compare it to a dog’s remains?

My heart collapsed in on itself. My nails dug into my palms.

“A damn box? Do you know she—”

I pointed at Tiffany, but before I could finish, Jonathan exploded.

“Didn’t anyone teach you manners? Pointing at people like that? You really did inherit your lunatic father’s blood. Want me to book you a bed at St. Mary’s Psychiatric Hospital?”

Once, when my mother died and my father lost his mind with grief, nearly killing himself, Jonathan had claimed to admire such devotion. He had said it was inspiring, something to emulate.

Now, I realized he had always despised it. In his eyes, my father was nothing more than a pathetic “psycho.”

And Jonathan Miller had nothing but contempt for a man who would risk his life for a woman.
