Chapter 3

I watched in horror as my mother’s ashes scattered into the fish tank, dissolving into nothing.

Something inside me snapped. I rushed forward and slapped Tiffany across the face with all my strength.

But the next moment, a much harder slap landed on my cheek.

Jonathan.

The blow rang in my ears, leaving me dizzy. For a fleeting second I thought I saw guilt flicker in his eyes, but

his tone was still icy:

“Enough, Emily! You act crazier the more I call you crazy. Do you want to force me to hit you again?”

I stood frozen, numbness crawling up my body.

Jonathan’s hand trembled as if he despised the scene, then he muttered, “Forget it.”

Just those two words–but Tiffany’s eyes welled up with red, as though deeply wronged.

“That’s it? Just forget it?” She gave a bitter laugh, covering a cheek that wasn’t even red. “I thought you actually cared about making me happy. Wasn’t the divorce agreement fake too?”

“If I’d known, I never should have moved in here. What a humiliation.”

She grabbed her dog’s urn and climbed toward the balcony on the second floor. Jonathan panicked, instantly

losing his composure.

“Tiffany, don’t joke around like this!”

“I’ll make her apologize to you. Isn’t that enough?”

Apologize? For spilling my mother’s ashes?

Fury tore through me. “Why? Jonathan Miller, never!”

But as Tiffany swung a leg over the railing, Jonathan yanked me close and threw me to the ground.

“Do it! Apologize!”

Tears blurred my vision. Two stories–falling wouldn’t even kill her. And yet his panic was a thousand times

greater than when I lost our child.

Jonathan… for my child, for my mother’s ashes–how could you ever repay

me?

Just then, the phone rang. A doctor from St. Mary’s Psychiatric Hospital.

“We don’t know why, but your father’s emotions are extremely unstable. He’s showing strong suicidal tendencies. You’d better come quickly!”

The world tilted. My knees buckled. I staggered toward the door.

But Jonathan seized my arm.

“Not until you apologize to Tiffany. Otherwise, I’ll make sure you never leave this house.”

“Didn’t you hear? My father wants to kill himself!” I screamed, yanking against his grip.

There was no change in his expression.

“I built that entire private ward just for your father. Isn’t that enough kindness? What difference will it make if you go?”

His words sliced me open like a dull blade, slow torture.

I bit my lip until blood flooded my mouth, tears streaming unchecked. At last, I gave in.

“I’m… sor… ry.”

“Look at Tiffany and say it properly,” Jonathan demanded.

Every second that ticked by felt like another knife in my chest.

So I crawled to Tiffany on my knees, banging my head against the floor again and again, repeating “sorry” until the word lost all meaning.

She pressed down her triumph, pretending reluctance. “I never asked for this. Isn’t Mr. Miller being a little dramatic?”

I turned back, my body stiff, my face wet with tears. Jonathan spread his arms wide, smiling like a benevolent victor, expecting me to fling myself into his embrace and beg for forgiveness like before.

Instead, I asked coldly, “Can I leave now?”

Behind his back, Tiffany flashed me a triumphant grin and waved her phone.
