Ch. The divorce paper he signed was his death warrant 4 The divorce paper he signed was his death warrant 4

A chill crawled up my spine. Something terrible was about to happen.

I ran through the corridors of St. Mary’s Psychiatric Hospital, nearly tripping over myself. There was my father–slamming his head against the railings, shouting my mother’s name.

I froze in helpless terror. Then a lilting voice drifted to me.

Tiffany.

“I might have…sent him a picture of me scattering your mother’s ashes. Who knew he’d react like this?”

My whole body trembled, pupils shrinking.

She leaned close, whispering in my ear, her eyes alight with cruel glee.

“Do you know why your mother died? Why your father went mad?”

Her whisper was a venomous tickle against my ear.

“I told your dying mother that your father was having an affair. Otherwise, why would he lose his mind out of guilt?”

My knees buckled. Tears pelted the floor.

She had destroyed everything I loved.

Before I knew it, my hands were locked around her throat.

Jonathan burst in and shoved me back, shock twisting his face.

“Emily, are you insane?”

Tiffany coughed delicately, putting on her act. “I just came to check on Mr. Carter. Who knew Emily hated me so much she’d try to kill me?”

In the room, my father snatched an electric baton from the nurses and brought it crashing toward his own

skull.

I lunged forward in desperation, but ten people restrained me.

Whispers spread among the onlookers:

“No wonder old Mr. Carter went mad. Must be hereditary. How could someone like Emily be Mrs. Miller?”

“She’s crazy herself. How could she ever compare to Miss Rose–so composed, so perfect?”

Jonathan’s face darkened–probably because I embarrassed him. But I didn’t care. I clawed again at Tiffany,

ready to crush her throat.

She dangled a set of keys before me, smirking. “I hid all the sedatives in this hospital. Let’s just watch your

father lose his mind.”

Rage and grief swallowed me whole. I raised my hand to strike again.

Jonathan roared, “Emily, enough! Your father’s been crazy for years. Why take it out on Tiffany? You’re disgraceful!”

So in his eyes, I was nothing but a madwoman. He never once asked why. Never cared how much I was

hurting.

I let my hand drop, laughing through tears. Jonathan’s eyes flickered with surprise at the sound.

Then I saw the orderlies strap my father to the bed. Electrodes were placed on his temples, crackling as they sent currents through his body.

Screaming, I wrestled the keys from Tiffany’s hand and forced my way into the room.

Jonathan watched my frantic back, his heart sinking–but he still shouted through the doorway:

“Fine! Stay in there with your crazy father. Don’t admit your fault, and you’ll never walk out again!”

I threw myself over my father, cradling him like a child, soothing him the way my mother once had.

Suddenly the power surged. Sparks sizzled, the acrid stench of burning wires filled the air.

Flames erupted. Chaos consumed the hospital. People ran screaming for their lives.

Outside in the car, Jonathan hesitated. His phone hovered in his hand, a message half–typed:

[Do you regret what you did now?]

But before he could hit send, smoke burst from the windows. The entire hospital was ablaze.
