Ch. The divorce paper he signed was his death warrant 8 The divorce paper he signed was his death warrant 8

Dragging my father out of the burning hospital nearly cost me my life.

“Dad, you didn’t do anything wrong. Mom won’t blame you from heaven. Don’t be afraid.”

He sobbed in my arms until he quieted at last.

I transferred him to a state psychiatric facility, finally giving myself a moment to bandage my own wounds.

That was when I saw the news reports–every channel declaring my death in the fire.

Beneath the headlines, Jonathan’s desperate Missing Person Notice flashed across the screen.

So everyone believed I was gone. Even Jonathan.

But for me, it was a form of liberation–a chance to disappear completely.

After treating my burns, I boarded a plane to Avalon.

At the airport, Daniel Brooks, my division captain, greeted me warmly.

“The Covert Ops Division has a new training exercise. Perfect timing for you to mentor some rookies.

Welcome back.”

At headquarters, the past already felt like smoke.

Once, I had abandoned my missions for Jonathan’s sake. I had traded my sharp edges for domesticity, letting my instincts grow dull.

Even when he trampled my dignity and paraded Tiffany before me, I endured.

But when he let her threaten my unborn child, desecrate my mother’s ashes–I knew I could endure no

longer,

In truth, I had never been completely numb–just biding my time. I had simply waited, until one day the

weight broke me.

And now, I was free.

At the shooting range, I fired one hundred consecutive shots. Every single one struck dead center.

“Emily, you’ve still got it,” Daniel said, admiration in his eyes.

He hesitated, then added, “Your return is valuable for the missions, but personally, I…”

I caught the flicker of hope in his expression and lowered my gaze.

“Captain, I’m not ready for romance. I need time to sort myself out.”

Daniel nodded without disappointment. “I respect that.”

The day before our operation, I tightened the bandages around my wounds and went out to buy painkillers.

I hadn’t expected to see the last person I wanted.

Chapter 8

80.00%

“Jonathan? How did you find me here?”

The bag of medicine slipped from my hand

In the dim light, his face was haggard, dark circles under his eyes. He bent to pick up the bag art hanted in

hack to me

Up close, I saw the bruised hollows beneath his gaze.

“Emily… I’ve broadcast hundreds of news reports. You must have seen them. Why didn’t you answer

“Do you know what I’ve been through these days? And here you are, living comfortably.”

“If I hadn’t discovered you canceled your identity and guessed you were on a mission, would you have never shown yourself again?”

I snatched the bag back, not bothering to hide my disgust.

“Yes. That’s exactly it. I never want to see you again. Every second alone with you makes me sick Satisfied?”

“Now get out of my way.”

As soon as I spoke, Jonathan’s expression shifted to one of desperation. He pulled me into his arms.

“Emily, enough sulking. However angry you are, it should be over by now. I’ve already bought our tickets home. Come back with me. Let’s start over.”

I shoved him off, almost laughing from the absurdity.
