Chapter 9

“What kind of fantasy are you living in?” I snapped.

“From now on, you can live out your fairy tale with your mistress. Pamper Tiffany all you want–it has nothing to do with me. But one thing is certain: you will never hurt me again.”

“We’re finished. Do you understand?”

Jonathan swayed as if struck. His face twisted, ugly with disbelief.

“Finished? Emily, do you even know what you’re saying? Marriage isn’t something you can just declare

over.”

“I can get rid of Tiffany. I’ll throw her out of the mansion and cut all ties with her. Isn’t that enough?”

A bitter laugh escaped me. so he considered it a generosity–cutting off his mistresses–as if it were some kind of gift to me?

Did he forget how he humiliated me? How he destroyed my family?

“Jonathan, I don’t care if it’s Tiffany, Lily, or any other woman you bring home. None of it matters. Because it has nothing to do with me.”

His eyes flared red. He clamped down on my wrist.

“Enough!”

“You say it doesn’t matter, but I know you. You’re thrilled that I’m willing to settle down. Emily, you still love me–you can’t lie about that.”

Pain shot through my arm, but all I felt was revulsion.

“Wait and see. I’ll prove it. I don’t love you anymore.”

The words hit him like a knife. For a moment he faltered, as if I had just confirmed his deepest fear. He let

  1. go.

I didn’t hesitate. I ran–through the streets, into my apartment, locking the door behind me.

Downstairs, Jonathan stood under the streetlight like a man drained of his soul.

He seemed unable to process my words–that I would look him in the eye and declare, “I don’t love you.”

I pulled the curtains tight and slept until morning.

When I went downstairs, paramedics were wheeling, someone into an ambulance.

Jonathan.

“Guess he failed to make up with his wife,” someone chuckled. “He stood out there all night begging forgiveness until he collapsed. Still muttered her name when he fainted.”

I ignored the gossip and walked straight to headquarters.

Chapter 9

90.00

Daniel handed out gear and reviewed the plan.

“Our mission is to recover SkyLeaf Corporation’s shipment at Harbor City Docks. Emily, I know you’re injured. Don’t push yourself.”

I shrugged, signaling I could handle it.

At the docks, gunfire erupted. Daniel refused to leave my side, guarding me stubbornly.

“Go help the others–I’m fine.”

“You’re hurt. If I don’t cover you, who will?” He hesitated, then added, “Besides…”

Before he could finish, knives pressed coldly against both our throats.

“Move, and you’re dead,” a smuggler growled.

I raised my hands, calculating the timing for a counterattack.

From the shadows, a figure emerged.

Tiffany.

Her red lips curved into a mocking smile.

“Surprised, Emily? You’ll never win against me.”

So the cargo fight was nothing but her trap.

“Out here, no one will know if I kill you. Why did you have to fight me for Jonathan?”

I clenched my teeth. “You can have him. I don’t want him anymore!”

“Let me go, or I’ll call the police!”

Tiffany twirled the knife, eyes gleaming.
