Chapter 249 Walking Right Into It

Chapter 249 Walking Right Into It

“What are you looking at, Skyler?” Quinn asked, holding a map.

10 Free Cams

Skyler rubbed his chin and asked with a mysterious air, “Quinn, Chanaca has four great academies. Besides Skyward Martial Academy, did any of the others send help up to Northville?”

“Of course they did.” Quinn folded the map away. “The four academies exist to produce top tier commanders for the country, and no school is going to pass up a chance at real combat experience like this.”

“Then would you say students from those other academies have gone deep into the mountains?

Quinn paused and fell silent.

She’d quietly looked into the other three academies over the past few weeks.

Ridgecrest Academy was a Northville school to begin with, so with a beast tide crisis on its doorstep it was going to throw everything it had at the problem.

Goldshore Academy down in Southville was built along the coast and spent every year fighting demonic beasts out of the ocean, so a land campaign was a rare source of experience for them. They’d never settle for being left behind.

Brookwind Academy in Eastvale specialized in studying every kind of formation array, and handling a beast tide was exactly the sort of thing they did best.

All four academies had been assigned to guard supply camps along the transport routes for this operation. and Skyward Martial Academy had drawn the short straw, ending up at Mistcloud Mountain, the camp with the fewest regular troops of any of them.

It was precisely because there were so few regular soldiers here that Skyward Martial Academy had been handed the outer perimeter cleanup, which meant the other academies were probably all free to head into the mountains.

Skyler raised an eyebrow. “Skyward Martial Academy is the number one academy in Chanaea, and now we’re stuck up here doing odd jobs. If word of that ever gets around, how are we supposed to hold our heads up around the other three?”

Alarm spread across Quinn’s face. “What… what are you planning to do?”

Skyler chuckled and turned his head toward the mountains. “Put together an elite team. We’re going in to take a look.”

Rivalry among the four academies of Chanaea was nothing new, so the moment Skyler said it, the Skyward Martial Academy students caught fire and started lining up to volunteer.

With everyone behind it, and with Skyler already in overall command of the operation, there was no stopping him no matter how much Quinn disliked the idea, and in the end all she could do was sigh.

Skyler really couldn’t sit still, and wherever he went, trouble followed.

Skyler, Gordon, Quinn, Glen, and one more, a girl named Sophie Pruitt from the Ascension Realm barrier class, made five in total.”

Toby had wanted to tag along and see the action too, but the academy’s actual assignment still needed handling, so Skyler flatly ordered him to stay behind and run the perimeter.

“We’ll be back by tomorrow morning at the latest, so I’m leaving everything here to you. Toby.” Skyler grinned and patted him on the shoulder.

Toby rolled his eyes, thoroughly annoyed. “My injuries still aren’t healed, so all I’d do out there is slow you down. I’ll sit this one out. But next time something this exciting comes up, you’d better take me with you.” or I’ll never forgive you.”

Skyler gave him a breezy smile. “Absolutely. You have my word.”

With that, he led his squad toward the mountains.

On a distant ridge, Joshua watched their figures shrink into the distance, his eyes cold enough to freeze the air around him.

Seamus said excitedly, “Mr. Abdiel called it perfectly. Skyler really is taking people into the mountains.”

Joshua snorted. “It’s a coincidence, nothing more. That was only one of several possible outcomes in the plan.

Seamus shook his head helplessly. “Joshua, I know you don’t trust him, but right now Skyler is our common enemy. Instead of tearing at each other, we should work together and take him out first, then settle up afterward.”

Joshua’s eyes narrowed as he looked Seamus straight in the eye. “What exactly are you getting at?”

Seamus smiled. “You and I are cut from the same cloth, Joshua. Between you and Abdiel. I’d much rather work with you.”

Joshua laughed out loud and gave Seamus’s shoulder a hard slap. “Good. Hearing that from you sets my mind at ease. We’ll do it your way this time. Is everything in the mountains set up?”

Seamus turned to look at the range. “Don’t worry. A five-star general’s clearance opens plenty of doors.”

Traces of fighting were everywhere in the mountains, with demonic beast corpses covering the trails, and the deeper in they went, the more bodies there were.

Gordon crouched down and studied the wounds on one of the carcasses.

“Every one of these died from a single killing blow. Decisive and precise. This was an expert’s work.”

Quinn waved one slender hand, and the map floated up and unrolled itself slowly in front of her. “Based

on the direction, these should be Goldshore Academy kills.”

Skyler nodded. “Then we need to pick up the pace, or there won’t be a scrap left for us.”

Quinn pressed a hand to her forehead “Maybe you should worry about how we’re going to explain ourselves if we actually run into the Goldshore Academy group.”

Skyler waved it off without a care. “What’s there to explain about killing demonic beasts?”

The roving demonic beast packs had all fled into this deep range, so it didn’t take the five-person squa long to run into their first batch of enemies.

Glen reported to Skyler, “About four and a half miles out at two o’clock there’s a swarm of beetle beasts. close to a thousand of them. At five o’clock, about four miles out, I’m picking up phantom wolves, fiye hundred of them. Which one first?”

Skyler’s eyebrow arched. “Let’s warm up on the phantom wolves.”

With that, Skyler drew the Worldbane Dragon Spear and charged out ahead of everyone.

Quinn and Gordon followed right behind, the three of them locking into formation, and it wasn’t long before they found the pack.

Boom!

Before the phantom wolves could react, silver arcs of lightning and a golden dragon’s shadow came crashing down and flattened a whole swath of them.

Then the ground split open without warning, and countless vines burst up out of the earth right in the middle of the pack.

Skyler caught it out of the corner of his eye. This was the first time he’d seen Quinn fight for real, and he’d never guessed she was a wood-element cultivator.
