Chapter 248 A Free Shot at Merits

Chapter 248 A Free Shot at Merits

Skyler stole a glance of his own, quickly looked away, and slid his lunch box across to Quinn.

“Pot roast and coleslaw. Thanks.”

+10 Free Costs

Quinn shot him a glare and snatched the box with a huff. “One of these days your laziness is going to be the death of you. Every single day, you’ve got me fetching your food.”

Skyler chuckled, laced his hands behind his head, and sprawled halfway back in his chair.

L

“All right, Skyler, I’m impressed.” Glen pulled off his headset and leaned in. “Quinn’s the prettiest girl in our whole academy, and somehow you’ve got her bringing you lunch.”

Skyler blinked. “Is that a big deal? Classmates help each other out. That’s all this is.”

Glen rolled his eyes, thoroughly unimpressed by the false modesty.

“Anyway, on a serious note, you’ve been somewhere else in your head for days now. What’s on your mind?

Skyler didn’t answer, but his eyes slowly turned grave.

Since he’d arrived in Northville, Joshua’s crew had come at him twice, first with the demonic beast ambush on the bus convoy, then with the relief mission to Fieldhaven Outpost.

Skyler could feel it clearly. Both of those moves had been laid out far more carefully than anything before, and even these last few quiet days felt like something they’d arranged on purpose.

Easing off and then bearing down again made the whole scheme almost impossible to guard against.

Joshua wasn’t capable of planning at that level, which meant the Wrights had put someone new in charge.

But who exactly was this person?

An enemy hiding in the dark was always more dangerous than one standing in plain sight, so Skyler couldn’t afford to be careless.

When Skyler said nothing, Glen clicked his tongue, a little put out. “Oh, right, another victory report came in from the front just now. Dominus Truch, one of the Nine Heavenly Realm experts, has officially joined the fighting, and he swept through the beast tide all by himself. The stalemate is over, and our forces have / started their counterattack.”

Skyler raised an eyebrow. “That sounds exactly like Mr. Truch. It’s what you’d expect from a Heavenly Realm expert who came up through the ranks. That should take a lot of the pressure off the front line, shouldn’t it?”

Glen nodded. “Yeah. Why?”

“Then the cleanup operation is about to start,” Skyler said,

Glen looked lost. “What cleanup operation?”

Chapter 248 A Free Shot at Merits.

10 Free Coins

Skyler pointed out the window at the mountains. The beast tide slipped into that range, and leaving it Mere is like letting a rattlesnake nest under your own front porch. The front line was stretched too thin before to spare anyone for the job, but now that there’s manpower available, do you really think they’ll leave it alone?”

It clicked for Glen, and he couldn’t hold back his excitement. “So you’re saying we finally get to go on the.

offensive?”

Skyler nodded. “That’s right. Tell everyone to get ready. We’ve been holed up long enough, and it’s abou time we went out and took a piece out of these demonic beasts.”

Sure enough, the order to sweep out the demonic beasts came down to every district that same afternoon,

Every supply depot along the line answered it, pulling units together right away to head into the mountains and clear the beasts out.

Conrad stepped up onto the platform and delivered the pre-mission briefing.

“Most of the people at this depot are student soldiers, so we’ve been assigned the outer edge of the range. That doesn’t mean anybody gets to relax out there. Demonic beasts are bloodthirsty, brutal, and unbelievably cunning, and one careless moment is all it takes for somebody to get hurt.”

“Yes, Mr. Gilmore.” The students answered as one.

Joshua picked up from there. “In case the demonic beasts try to draw us out and hit an empty camp. I’ll be staying behind for the duration of the operation, which means we need a student to serve as team leader and take everyone through the mission.”

The students frowned and turned scornful looks toward Seamus.

Seamus had been so useless during the last demonic beast attack that there was nothing left to say about it, so surely no one would hand him the lead again.

To everyone’s surprise, Joshua turned in a different direction entirely and pointed at Skyler. “Skyler pulled off one remarkable feat after another during the reinforcement operation, and every one of us saw what he can do as a leader. I propose that he take the role of team leader this time. Does anyone have an objection?”

Skyler’s brow furrowed, and he looked over at Joshua in surprise.

Hell must have frozen over, because they were handing him a free shot at the credit.

“No objection.”

“Skyler’s in a league of his own. I’m fine with him leadings.”

“Skyler! Skyler!”

The students were thrilled beyond words, and one after another they started chanting his name.

Joshua smiled and nodded, though his eyes stayed fixed on Skyler.

“As team leader, you’re responsible for the safety of every student out there, so whatever you do, don’t

sh deep into the mountains. Understood?”

On the surface it was a reminder not to overstep, but the tone behind it was worth a second look.

There was contempt in it, mixed with a trace of a dare, as though he were saying. “You’re so capable, aren’t you? Do you have the nerve to head deep into those mountains and pull off something unforgettable again?”

Skyler folded his arms, his manner steady and even.

“Don’t worry. I’ll take full responsibility.”

Before long everyone was packed and squared away, and the unit officially moved out.

With Skyler leading them, 200 elite students of Skyward Martial Academy made their way slowly toward the mountains.

By the time they reached the foot of the range, the sounds of battle were already carrying down from deep inside.

From a distance, light from every kind of martial art flashed without pause, and the towering peaks trembled with it.

Ding!

The soft chime of the System sounded in his ear. The

“Hunting mission activated. Kill 30 sixth-tier demonic beasts. Reward: Increase one stage of Archmaster Realm cultivation. (0/30)”

Skyler raised an eyebrow. After going so long without a refresh, a hunting mission had finally turned up

again.

Thirty sixth-tier demonic beasts were no small number.

With the beast tide having fled almost entirely into the mountains, the outer zone assigned to Skyler’s group to held nothing but a scattered handful of low-tier demonic beasts.

If he wanted to finish this mission, he’d have no choice but to head deep into the mountains and take his

chances.
