Joshua had turned the situation to his own advantage, pulling his troops back to Mistcloud Mountain first so that Skyler would be forced to lead a relief force out.

Under normal circumstances, a group of student soldiers like Skyler’s would never stand a chance against a beast tide that size. Then Victor would trip him up in the confusion, and Skyler would end up dead somewhere in the middle of the horde.

ง

With the reinforcements wiped out, Fieldhaven Outpost was certain to fall.

After two brutal battles against Skyler and the Fieldhaven Outpost garrison, the beast tide would have taken heavy losses. That was when Joshua would march in to counterattack, and with reinforcements from the other outposts backing him up, his odds would be a whole lot better.

Better still if the demonic beasts held Fieldhaven Outpost and the fight dragged on, because the longer it lasted, the more credit Joshua would take when he finally retook the outpost.

As for how many soldiers would die for nothing on the front line.

What did that have to do with him?

The thought made Skyler grind his teeth hard enough to crack them.

Joshua was a real piece of work, willing to throw away the entire front line for his own glory. The man was rotten to the core.

“No need,” Skyler said, glaring at Joshua with open disgust. “The beast tide at Fieldhaven Outpost has already been driven back, and Chief Bell will file a full report with warzone command later.”

Joshua froze and stared at him in disbelief.

The beast tide that hit Fieldhaven Outpost had been hundreds of thousands strong, and even though most of them were small third-tier and fourth-tier demonic beasts, there was no way a hundred-odd student soldiers could have handled that.

How had they pulled it off?

Skyler read the question on his face and let out a cold laugh. “We didn’t just drive the beast tide back. We brought you a present too. Captain Gaines, Gordon, bring them in.”

The two of them immediately hauled Victor and Martin forward, bound hand and foot, and dumped them at Joshua’s feet.

One look at the state the two of them were in, and Joshua sucked in a sharp breath.

“Sky… Skyler, what’s the meaning of this? Martin is your teacher, and Victor is a company commander in the northern warzone command. How could you tie them up like that?”

Gordon came forward, wrapped head to toe in bandages, leaning on a classmate for support, and fixed Joshua with a furious stare.

“You tell us, Mr. Murray. Why send two men to help us and then keep them out of the fight? If Skyler

dn’t thought fast, and if Captain Gaines and his men hadn’t done the right thing, every last one of us would have died out there today.”

The students had just come through a vicious battle, and thinking back on how close they’d come to dying still had their hearts pounding. Their fear turned to fury, and one after another they glared at Joshua.

Joshua swallowed hard, his gaze darting around as he defended himself. “Gordon, that’s nonsense. When did I ever order them not to fight?”

Skyler raised an eyebrow. That was exactly the answer he’d been waiting for.

“So you’re telling us you had no idea what they were doing, Mr. Murray?”

Joshua’s face stiffened, and since any answer felt like a trap, all he could do was stammer, “What… what were they doing?”

Skyler pointed at the two men lying on the ground. “Out there on the field, these two watched the beast tide slam into Fieldhaven Outpost and did nothing. They even refused to let Captain Gaines fight alongside us. What they did is unforgivable.”

Toby stepped forward, holding a bloodstained school uniform in both hands, his eyes brimming with

tears.

“This belonged to Tonnie, our underclassman. The demonic beasts killed him, and we couldn’t even find his body. This bloody uniform is all that’s left of him. If it weren’t for those two, he’d still be alive.”

The sight of Tonnie’s bloody uniform brought tears to the students’ eyes all over again, and the looks they threw at Victor and Martin turned murderous.

“These two didn’t care whether their own people lived or died. They just stood back and watched. They don’t deserve to wear our uniform, and they sure don’t deserve to teach. Nothing short of an execution will

settle this.”

At that, even Quinn and the others who had stayed behind at camp couldn’t hold back their tears.

With that many people glaring at them, Martin and Victor both shrank back and dropped their heads.

Joshua’s face twisted, and inwardly he cursed the pair of them for being useless.

All they’d had to do was finish Skyler off in the chaos. Instead, they’d turned the whole thing into a public spectacle, and on top of that, exactly one person had died.

In a relief operation, a pile of bodies was just a statistic, but a single death was an incident, and everyone would want to know exactly how that one person died.

Now there were more than a hundred students and 50 elite soldiers standing there as witnesses, so how was he supposed to cover for anyone?

Joshua gritted his teeth and forced himself to speak. “I have a rough picture of what happened, but this is a complicated situation, and I’ll need to look into it carefully before I decide anything.”

Skyler cut him off. “We’ve got witnesses and we’ve got evidence, Mr. Murray, so what’s left to investigate?

are you planning to cover for those two?”

Joshua’s eyes went wide. “That’s ridiculous. We’re in the middle of a military emergency, and every reward and punishment has to be decided by our higher-ups. You can’t just—”

Before he could finish, Glen burst through the door.

“Orders from higher-ups. Victor and Martin stood by while Fieldhaven Outpost was overrun by demonie beasts and did nothing. Dereliction of duty of the worst kind. Given the outrage they’ve caused, they’re to be executed without mercy.”

Joshua’s mouth hung open, and his face went as dark as a storm cloud.

The whole thing had slipped completely out of his control. The crisis at Fieldhaven Outpost had only just ended, so how had the higher-ups already learned every detail?

Skyler smiled faintly and quietly slipped a miniature camera up his sleeve.

From his first night at Mistcloud Mountain, he’d known this trip to Northville wasn’t going to be simple, so he’d carried a miniature camera on him ever since.

He’d brought it along to deal with Zachary and Seamus and never expected to use it on Victor and Martin instead.

Every eye in the room locked onto Joshua, waiting to see what he could possibly say now.

Joshua drew a deep breath and pushed the words out. “Understood. Someone take these two to headquarters and let the higher-ups handle them.”
