“Yes, sir.” Two soldiers immediately stepped out from behind Joshua.

Victor and Martin looked like they’d just been handed a pardon, and they scrambled toward Joshua or their hands and knees.
In that same instant, a streak of cold steel whistled through the air, and Victor’s whole body jerked as he turned his head in disbelief.
Skyler was staring Joshua down with ice in his eyes, and the Worldbane Dragon Spear in his hand was already buried in Victor’s back, driven straight through his heart.
“Skyler!” Joshua roared, shock and rage tangled together in his voice. “How dare you carry out an exécution without authorization?”
Skyler pulled the spearhead free without a flicker of fear. “The higher-ups ordered them executed without mercy, not shipped off to headquarters. If you think I got it wrong, Mr. Murray, you’re welcome to report everything that happened today and let headquarters deal with me.”
Joshua choked on that. Skyler had followed orders to the letter, so what could Joshua possibly pin on him for killing Victor? If anything, it was Joshua’s own attempt to protect the pair that was starting to look bad.
The corner of Skyler’s mouth curled up into something cruel and savage. “Martin is just as guilty, and he’s standing right there beside you, Mr. Murray, so why haven’t you killed him? Unless the two of you were in on it together.”
Joshua took an alarmed step back.
With the war effort hanging in the balance, a label like that was the last thing he could afford, and if Skyler actually reported today’s events up the chain, the truth would come out. He’d come here to kill Skyler in the first place, and he’d never survive an investigation.
Joshua hesitated for a moment, and then murder crept into his eyes.
Martin instinctively backed up a step. “Mr. Murray, you…”
Joshua’s face turned to stone, and rather than let Martin say another word, he brought his palm down on the man’s head.
Martin shuddered, as if every bone in his body had been ripped out at once, and he crumpled into a limp heap.
Skyler nodded in satisfaction.
This was exactly the outcome he’d wanted, because it was how he intended to make an example out of them.
He’d started planning it the moment Joshua turned up at Mistèloud Mountain.
He wanted every single person to understand that anyone who helped Joshua come after him ended up

dead.
No just dead, but dead in front of Joshua.
And not just in front of him, but by his own hand.
Skyler had rubbed his face in it from start to finish, and all Joshua could do was take it.

Now let’s see who still had the nerve to work for Joshua after this.

That night, inside the Mistcloud Mountain camp.
Abdiel grabbed Joshua by the collar and slammed him against the wall.
“You’re useless. Why didn’t you follow my plan? Could you have handled this any worse?”
Joshua’s face was livid, and his white-knuckled fists said everything about the anger he was holding back.
Abdiel was nothing more than an Ascension Realm martial artist, the kind of man Joshua could crush to pieces with one casual strike.
But Joshua didn’t dare.
Abdiel was the man Timothy had sent to replace him, so laying a hand on him meant openly defying the Wrights, and Joshua would come out of that far worse than Abdiel ever would.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Abdiel. I never expected it to turn out this way.”
“Shut your mouth!” Abdiel roared, driving a fist into the side of Joshua’s neck. “My plan was for you to personally lead the reinforcements to Fieldhaven Outpost with Skyler and kill him in the confusion. Why did you hand the job off to someone else?”
Joshua held his tongue, though inwardly he was sneering.
By now everyone knew Skyler had Abyssara of the Leonards standing behind him, and as long as that old man was alive, nobody would dare move against Skyler in the open.
Abdiel was simply using this whole affair to get Joshua killed in the Leonards’ retaliation, which would clear the way for Abdiel to become the next head of the Murrays and an honored guest of the Wrights.
For decades, Abdiel had been nothing but a lapdog at Joshua’s heels, and the man owed his sudden rise to pure luck.
There was no chance Joshua would walk into a trap that obvious.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Abdiel. It was my fault.”
Abdiel drew several deep breaths, shoved Joshua away, and strode over to the window.

Northville was bitterly cold, and the icy wind stinging his face was the only thing that came close to
othering the fury boiling in his chest.
“What’s done is done, so there’s no point dragging it up again. This is my final warning to you, Joshua. From tonight on, you do exactly what I say, every single time.
“If you step out of line even once, I’ll take it straight to Mr. Franklin, so you’d better watch yourself.”
Joshua lowered his eyes and dipped his head respectfully. “Yes, Mr. Abdiel. I understand.”
Abdiel nodded, his temper settling back down.
“The Fieldhaven Outpost play already tipped our hand, and Skyler will be far more guarded around you from here on. Keep everything by the book for now, and we’ll wait until Mr. Franklin puts the last piece in place.”
“Yes, Mr. Abdiel. What should I be doing in the meantime?”
Abdiel turned to look at the military map on the wall.
“A massive demonic beast attack on Fieldhaven Outpost is going to get the higher-ups’ attention, and they’re bound to order a sweep of the roving beast packs. Make sure Skyler is the one leading troops out, and keep him occupied somewhere else.”
Seamus walked over. “What about me, Mr. Abdiel? What should I do?”
Abdiel glanced at him, and for once his expression softened. “You’ve handled your part well. Keep working your way closer to Zachary. When the moment calls for it, that fool will make the perfect pawn to throw
away.”
A few days later, at the Mistcloud Mountain camp.
After the crushing defeat at Fieldhaven Outpost, the roving beast packs that had been circling the routes along the Northville border melted back into the mountains and never troubled the human supply convoys again.
The students of Skyward Martial Academy finally got a few quiet days out of it.
Skyler spent those days in the communications station following the situation at the front, and along the way he grew a lot closer to Quinn, the tactical genius.
“It’s lunchtime. You coming, Skyler?”
After a busy morning, Quinn leaned back in her chair and stretched.
The noon sun was blazing, and the golden light traced every curve of her figure until the comm operators around her nearly forgot to blink.
